The assistant

Ask, and watch it happen.

Find the moment a ranger warns about flash floods in an 18-minute recording. Get a chart from forty spreadsheets. Regroup 2,000 photos for a book, then undo it in one step. The assistant does the work and shows it on the canvas, next to your files.

  • The moment"When does the ranger talk about flash floods?" The answer links to 17:10.
  • The page"Where does the contract set the deadline?" Page 12, highlighted.
  • The picture"The one of the arch at sunrise, from the spring trip."
  • The pattern"Which of these files mention a social security number?"

Why answers come in seconds: Mesa prepares your files on your Mac as you work, with Apple's on-device models.

Ask for a chart from forty spreadsheets: the assistant writes and runs the code on your data, and the chart lands on the canvas beside its sources.

Things to ask

What did she say about the budget in this recording? The quote, with the moment; a click plays from there.
Which of these files contain social security numbers?A frame of them, ready to review.
Find more photos of this person. The look-alikes, gathered in a new frame.
Research the companies in these contracts.A new document with sources, beside the contracts.
Compare these two contracts and list the differences.A short list, each point linked to its page.
Rename these files to include the date.A list of changes to approve; one undo reverses them.

Rearrange anything. Nothing moves.

Ask the assistant to lay out your files for the job in front of you: a book, a case, a client handoff. It makes an arrangement, a new layout of your real files. Open, edit or drag out anything in it. Keep it, change it, or throw it away; the folders on disk stay exactly as they were.

On the folder itself, new files are added and changes to files you already have wait for your approval. Either way, one undo reverses the assistant's whole turn. That's what makes it worth asking for big changes.

Yes, it opens that MacWrite file from 1988.

Mesa reads the Mac's own past. MacWrite, Word 4, ClarisWorks, FullWrite and WriteNow documents, MacPaint and PICT pictures, and QuickTime movies that macOS stopped playing years ago all show up as themselves, with their original icons, and open right on their cards. Find searches inside them too.

No emulator, no beige Mac in the closet, no asking around for a copy of ClarisWorks.

Chapter 3: Results

The survey ran for six weeks in the spring of 1988. Of the 212 forms returned, 37 were completed in pencil, which the lab's new scanner declined to read.

These results were, frankly, inconclusive. A further study is proposed (see Appendix F, which is on the other floppy).

Opened on its card, exactly as it was written.
